by Mark Sullivan Professional Hunter
In the Swahili language which is spoken throughout East Africa, M'bogo means Cape buffalo. Once heard it spoken by your African tracker, you never forget it. It grabs you like a vice and doesn't let go. Many a mid-afternoon's day has been jump-started by the very whisper of it. The excitement generated is infectious. Adrenaline sets in, minds clear, emotions run wild and men prepare for combat. It's no coincidence that over the years it has become my favorite word in any language.
M'bogo was filmed during the 1992 hunting season in the Moyowosi Game Reserve of western Tanzania. In those days the Moyowosi was believed to hold the largest concentration of buffalo found on the African Continent. A fact I did not disagree with. Even more surprising than their great numbers was the quality of the heads taken which were beyond compare.
In this movie you will see that largest and biggest Cape buffalo ever killed in one movie with 80 guns shots compressed into 62 minutes of heart-pounding, in-your-face action. I often joke with people that before watching this movie they should first put on ear protection. Though that may be overstating it, to my knowledge there is not another movie like it in the world.
1992 was also the first year to use a .577 Nitro Express double rifle and I wanted to see what effect its 750 grain bullets travelling at 2150 feet per second would have on buffalo. To my surprise, it produced less than expected results and I soon learned an important lesson. It's not the size or speed of the bullet that counts, but where it's placed.
Take the time Steve Szpyrka and I caught up with three bulls walking towards us over open ground. Steve was using a .416 Weatherby shooting 400 grain bullets at 2,700 feet per second. He was sure it would knock any buffalo on his butt. Knowing buffalo as I do, I bet him it wouldn't. Steve shot the great bull in the center of his bulldozer-sized chest and he just turned and ran away. A hail of bullets followed including my own, but in the end, I won the bet!
This is just one of many great hunts you will see in M'bogo. There are plenty of gun shots to go around; some good and some bad. But more importantly, you will see truly monster bulls, hunted the right way, taking punishment the likes of which you've never seen before.
